We booked a cruise on this ship to the French Riviera and Italy in May of 2020 which we cancelled due to an obvious reason. I'm from the U.S. and my husband and I are loyal cruisers with Celebrity. I really appreciate your input on how Celebrity is handling the safety of the passengers. Travel is still put on hold for us as we don't want to take any chances. Design and facilities
The ship's main restaurants are served by dedicated to each table wait staff (sommelier, assistant waiter, head waiter). Passengers are assigned to one of the 4 MDRs but still have the option (upon request) to dine in the other 3. Oceanview Cafe, my personal favorite, is set up like a buffet with various islands featuring a dozen different styles of cuisine, from Indian and Mexican food to traditional salad and pasta bars.

And while the 2,910-passenger ship is fancy, it's not stuffy – there's a relaxed vibe throughout. Celebrity are known for their ‘modern luxury’ style – more luxurious hotel than floating mega resort – so it’s no surprise that Apex isn’t trying to compete to be the biggest ship around. With 16 decks, 2910 passengers and 1319 crew, she’s dwarfed by the giants of cruising – Symphony of the Seas holds 5500 passengers.

The deck is cantilevered off the side of the ship and moves up and down, to the various decks. Depending on the deck it’s stopped at, the Magic Carpet serves different functions. The relatively small deck that seats 100 sometimes acts as an open-air dining space, and then also as a party spot. By night, Eden is an ever-evolving experience that transforms throughout your vacation.
The spa and wellness center gets a bit of a reboot over the Celebrity Edge offerings as well, with new programming, including spa-centric dining options that differ according to the cruise itinerary you happen to sail. Eden is a 3-deck high (aft-location on decks 4, 5, 6) lounge-bar-restaurant venue with live music and shows programming changing throughout the day. Eden Lounge measures m3 ( ft3) and covers a total area of 1175 m2 (12650 ft2). Passengers in AquaClass staterooms or Suites eat at Blu Restaurant, offering lighter "spa-inspired" cuisine. The Luminae Restaurant is named "Luminae at The Retreat" and (along with Blu) is part of the private, Suite Class passengers exclusive complex "The Retreat".
Concerts by the pool, in the nightclub, or at the rooftop garden provided alternative diversion day and night. Live music fills almost every space on the ship during the evening hours, which encourages bar-hopping from the brewery, to the wine bar, and the Eden lounge. Drinks on Celebrity Apex are not included, but there are beverage packages that can ease the pain on your wallet if you enjoy a good tipple. The nightclub space doubles as a meeting venue during the day, but also hosts entertainment like an escape room or game show events, too. This is a lively spot in the central atrium where the bartenders are more like jugglers and magicians pouring, serving, and stacking drinks to great applause beneath a gigantic LED chandelier.

The last 18 months have been tough on the travel industry, and no sector more so than cruising, which saw ships out of action for over a year. Most programming and activities are included in the cost of your cruise fare. You'll pay extra for activities including babysitting, slumber parties and escorted lunches. Families are certainly welcome onboard Celebrity Apex, but those looking for things like water slides and kiddie pools will be disappointed. At the top of the ship, the Oceanview Café buffet is larger and lighter than ever, with a double-height space which helps it feel extra spacious. Food stations serve food from around the world from morning until night – though due to current restrictions staff serve you rather than you helping yourself, so things can be a little slower. This two-storey area at the front of the ship is exclusive to Suite Class guests.

One of the most expected entertainment venues you’ll find on Celebrity Apex is also the most unexpected. Artwork displayed on the ship is world class, and guests can even opt in for a guided Art & Design tour. Eden, a bar, restaurant, and so much more, might just be the prettiest space at sea. Celebrity and other cruise lines have put a lot of work into making cruising as safe as possible to get the industry up and running again. Firstly you have to meet any requirements put in place by your departure port – which for Greece in summer 2021 was being fully vaccinated or showing proof of a negative PCR test, and filling in a passenger locator form. Celebrity Apex is also the first ship in the fleet to be use shore power, where ships ‘plug in’ to ports so they don’t need to use their engines (though ports with this facility are limited at present). Celebrity are working with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council to offer sustainable tours and share oceanographic data with marine charity Oceanscope.
But as with most Celebrity Cruises trips there’s a mix of American and European guests, and crew from all around the world. As a fan of Celebrity’s Solstice Class ships, I did worry I’d miss some of my favourite spaces on board, like the Sky Bar and Library, but there are plenty of new ones to replace them. Instead of a central foyer running through the ship, Apex’s public spaces are concentrated on decks 3–5 and 14–16, with other decks primarily used for accommodation. Celebrity Apex has 1467 staterooms – around 10% are inside and 10% are ocean view (meaning with a window), but the vast majority have a veranda. Aqua Class and Concierge Class staterooms come with extra perks, from access to the thermal suite and Blu restaurant to a dedicated concierge. The smell of the sea, sun on your skin, the taste of new food and the sound of different languages – just a few of the things I’ve missed from travelling.
